My First Ever Photography Contest / Exhibition!!!!

Thu Mar 5, 2009, 6:32 PM
I need your help!

A local council (the Town of Vincent)is holding an annual photography contest called Visions of Vincent [link]
Everyone is allowed two entries from each of the two categories (ie 4 total):
1. Neighbours
2. Open

I have nadda for the Neighbours entry since I'm not good at photographing people and I just don't like people much as subjects to be honest! (I was considering taking photos of animals as the 'other neighbours';)

So I'm entering two photos for the 'Open' category which is anyone, anything, anyhow from anywhere (so long as it's within the Town of Vincent)

I need a bit of help choosing which photos to enter and also making them as good as they can get. I can still go and reshoot things too. Entries close on Friday 13th March though!

I've put all my options into a collection in my gallery: [link]

I'm considering submitting NIght at Sea and Lanterns I (or II)

If you could please give me any feedback you can that'd be awesome :D

  • Mood: Excited
  • Eating: too much
  • Drinking: frequently

A little hard to say. It's hard to make these decisions for another person :aww: Go with your heart

Frangipanis is beautiful [link]

sorry but I need to say the opposite, frangipanis is normal and the lanterns series seems "commercial". as I told you I like night at sea. try also with your neighbours, photograph them with a telephoto lens if you're shy, with a 200 mm you're as much far to be not noticed. it is just an idea, but portrait them while making the ordinary things such as throwing the garbage outside, play with children etc..

Hi Anna, I really like the "Night At Sea" - what is it? It looks fascinating! An old door perhaps?

Of the Lantern series, I prefer II, because you've turned them upside-down - a nice touch!

You could also consider Trio - it's different!

Hope this helps!!! ;)

Thanks for the feedback :D

I'm actually thinking of submitting Lanterns I (because I like the colour tones and it's what I originally envisaged) but upside down. I think it looks more like a sea of candles that way:) What do you think?

Night at Sea is just part of a wall. My boyfriend (who's been a photographer for a lot longer than I have) kept making fun of me for taking photos of boring walls ;) It's actually Planet Video, a trendy video store that's somewhat of a landmark in the suburb the photo's from.

And believe me if I could submt 3 photos in the Open category I would submit Trio too! But I definately Like Night at Sea better:)
:iconaranwa-tari:
Yes, I would prefer Night At Sea too - good choice! And isn't it amazing that part of a wall can look so amazing taken out of context?

I like the upside-down version I've seen. My laptop is nearly asleep - frightfully slow - and I'm on my way to :sleepy:  myself, so I don't have the time/energy to wait for your page to come up now. I'll have another look tomorrow, ok?

Yes I think the biggest problem with frangipanis is that they could be from anywhere and wouldn't be recognised as being from the Town of Vincent. Although, when I thnk of Leederville (one of its suburbs) I do think of frangipanis as there are hundreds of them! It seems every garden has a tree. I also think of brothels but that's another story... ;) (and something I won't be submitting for the contest :giggle:)

Vincent does have 2 suburbs which are renowned for its cafe strips. Maybe I should give the "people photos" another try... I think the problem is I am a bit shy! Ok very shy ;) A zoom lens is a good idea though.

Thanks for the votes :D
Why do you like Lanterns II? Is it the cropping, o that its upside down? I'm considering turning Lanterns I upside down and submitting that. What do you think?
:iconrazberri:
Good night then:)

And yes, I have a bit of a love affair with abstract photography

Hi Anna, I just had another look at the Lanterns, and I agree: Lantern I upside-down - you're right: the colour is better!
